No matter how difficult the road may seem ahead of us, there is nothing new under the sun. It’s not uncommon for people who are opposed to the success of those who are “different” to do whatever they can to try to stop them.

Dr. Licata hails from West Palm Beach where he currently serves as Regional Superintendent of about a third of the district’s schools. Licata is no stranger to Broward. In his “acceptance speech” he simply said through a slew of emotions that he is coming home.  Licata attended school in Broward and has strong family ties here.  He is a University of Miami Hurricane Alum.

With much anticipation, today’s School Board meeting in Broward county is expected to be like a precursor to the Fourth of July show.  With a boldness like none seen before, Dr. Earlean Smiley has put together an organization chart and placed people in positions to “ready the district” for the change needed to move forward towards excellence.  Whether you have agreed or disagreed with her, there is no doubting that Smiley is a strategic leader who has demonstrated a great deal of vision, competence and confidence not seen in Broward in a long time. She was described by her former student, Board member, Torey Alston as “unbossed” and “unbothered”, and that she has been.

We are calling on all villages to assist in this clarion call to address the weakening of this country in its respect for the power of diversity. Calling every grass roots organization, each Temple, Lodge, Church, Mosque, the Divine Nine and their youth groups out to support this event. Not only will there be voter education as well as voter registration with the giving away of banned books, different community organizations will have information available to include health related screenings testing and other services as well as FREE FOOD and entertainment.

I am going to simply cut to the chase. I am not at all surprised, but still disturbed by Zeman’s latest behavior.  He has gone to great lengths to position himself for power. It was Zeman who broke the search process by speaking to Dr. Jesus Jara after the application window for the superintendent position closed. It was Zeman who connected Jara to Alhadeff.  It was Zeman who strategically brought up the subject of another candidate but would not call Jara by name, instead egged Alhadeff into doing it from the dais. From what I know of Alhadeff, she made a mistake but if she is as smart, measured, and meticulous as I believe she is, she won’t make that mistake again.

We struggle with our situations and are left with many sleepless nights. Comfort and peace seem to last for fleeting seconds while miseries linger for what seems like eternity.

I wrote this piece many years ago, and today the thought of getting involved with life threatening incidents to save lives seems to be a common constant thought do to the climate of racism, fascism, intolerance and fear. These thoughts are  so prevalent. We all may become confronted with this devastating choice. If it comes before you, make sure you are prepared for the outcome either way it goes because it will affect you for the rest of your life. Bobby R. Henry, Sr.
