The Democratic Black Caucus of Florida endorsed Stanley Campbell for U.S. Senate last Friday, ahead of next month’s primary election to select a candidate to run against incumbent Rick Scott. That show of support came a few weeks after the military veteran and tech entrepreneur received backing from the Florida AFL-CIO, giving him momentum in his race against former U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, who has received endorsements from dozens of elected officials and progressive organizations throughout the state. On August 1, 1920, Henrietta Lacks was born as Loretta Pleasant in Roanoke, Virginia. This year will mark 104 years since she was born and her family’s over 70 year pursuit of justice for the taking of her cells without consent, (now widely known as ‘HeLa’ cells- scientists’ intentional efforts to hide her human existence by only referencing the first two letters of her first name -Henrietta (“He”) and the last two letters of her last name- Lacks (“La”).
This powerful show of support came just a day after 40,000 Black women joined in a similar Zoom call, generating about $2 million for Harris and sending a resounding message of solidarity and resolve.
The group said it’s proud to endorse Harris’s “historic candidacy for president” and remains deeply committed to ensuring Democrats hold the White House.
As soon as President Biden bowed out and passed the baton to Vice President Kamala Harris, Black folk started mobilizing. The movement was swift, phone calls, chats, fundraisers. Black people from all over started lining up behind her as the nation’s next leader, especially Black women and younger voters.
The community came together for a special event paying tribute to the late Congressman John Lewis and highlighting the significance of Black votes in shaping our future. The candlelight memorial and fish fry took place on July 17th at Burrows Electric Co. in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
Less than a day after President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential campaign and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination, the Republican Jewish Coalition launched a series of tweets calling Harris “a total disaster for Israel” and “disgraceful,” falsely accusing her of refusing to condemn a Hamas supporter during a speaking engagement at a college.
