     On September 28, two of the nation’s largest and most influential business groups filed a lawsuit against the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and its Director Rohit Chopra. The action aims to prevent the CFPB from using its existing authority to protect consumers from racial discrimination when seeking mortgages, auto loans, credit cards, bank accounts, or other financial services.

     Pompano Beach Arts has announced the complete lineup for the much anticipated second annual Jazz Fest Pompano Beach taking place Friday, January 20 and Saturday, January 21, 2023.   The headlining act for Friday night’s concert on the Great Lawn by the beach is 13-time Grammy Award-nominated jazz fusion band Spyro Gyra.  Performing Saturday afternoon in Old Town Pompano Beach is a stellar selection of jazz artists including Nanny Assis, Fanni Sárközy, Yanier Horta, Julio Montalvo and the Fabulous Dixie Kings, and the FIU Jazz Big Band with the FIU Student Vocal Studio.      In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month during October, the Florida Department of Health, Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program in Broward County encourages all women to receive regular breast exams and mammogram screenings to promote early detection and treatment of breast cancer. “The Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program in Broward County (FBCCEDP) has more than 28 screening sites and is proud to partner with local imaging facilities that are close to most residential communities. It is our goal to make it easier to receive a mammogram,” said Trivel McKire, MPH, Regional Coordinator for the Broward, Palm Beach, and Martin County Region.

Florida Power & Light Company recently awarded more than $13,100 to Broward Education Foundation as part of its statewide EmPOWERing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Educators Program. The program’s goal is to increase teacher knowledge of effective math and science instructional practices that align with Florida Standards through peer-to-peer learning of best practices within a district.

The good news on cancer? According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), cancer incidence and mortality overall are declining in all population groups in the U.S.—due in large part to impressive advances in diagnosis and treatment as well as increased public awareness of the need for regular screenings. The bad news? Minority populations – Blacks and African Americans, in particular – are still more likely to develop cancer and die from the disease.

The statewide organizations also want to remind the public that simple hygiene efforts, such as washing your hands, covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and staying home when you’re sick can also help protect against the flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone six months and older get a flu vaccination as early as possible, preferably in September or October. However, getting vaccinated anytime during the flu season can provide protection as the vaccine can help reduce the risk of flu and associated hospitalizations and deaths.
