With high temperatures stretching long past the official end of summer in Florida, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) debuts a new, free resource to help families be energy efficient. The FPL House of Savings is an innovative, interactive tool that uses augmented reality to help customers learn how to save on their monthly energy bill. Customers can enter the House of Savings at www.FPL.com/TakeControl.

One of the Association’s fundraising events that is dedicated to supporting the needs of people with sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait is its annual walk. The Sickle Cell Walk brings together people with sickle cell along with the parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, relatives, and providers in a network of friendship and support. Funds raised help fuel innovative research, advocacy, and critical educational programs and services. Together, we are creating a world where all people with sickle cell can reach their full potential. SCDABC would like to thank The City Commission of North Lauderdale, the City Manager, and the wonderful staff for sponsoring the Walk 4 Sickle Cell on September 24, 2022, at the beautiful Hampton Pines Park.

     Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County, which ignites the power and promise of youth by creating and supporting one-to-one mentoring relationships, stepped right up to join forces with the Broward affiliate of Take Stock in Children to provide scholarship opportunities for the youth in the program. Take Stock is committed to breaking the cycle of poverty for low-income, academically qualified students by providing opportunities for a post-secondary education.

     Whether it’s bringing attention to Hollywood’s lack of diversity or leading efforts to increase Black voter turnout, New Orleans-bred actor Anthony Mackie has often used his platform to effect change. His latest community-driven project was centered on empowering residents in his hometown. The “Captain America” star led home repair efforts in NOLA for families still grappling with the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, NOLA reported.

“We are very impressed with the caliber of the work, the quality of the presentations, and the outstanding, innovative ideas the students displayed at Zillow’s second HBCU Housing Hackathon,” said Aldona Clottey, Zillow vice president of Corporate Social Responsibility and one of the judges. “With 20 schools represented, this hackathon not only helps Zillow continue to foster engagement among HBCUs, but it allows us to tap our next generation of technology leaders to help ensure we are continuously evolving as a company and positively impacting the technology industry as a whole.”

      St. Petersburg, Florida—The political invincibility of Governor Ron DeSantis is melting away according to a recent poll showing a dramatic shift in support to Democratic opponent Charlie Crist. The survey was taken after DeSantis shipped legal immigrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. The poll featured in Newsweek and Nate Silver’s 538 shows Crist leading DeSantis by 6 points, which is beyond the margin of error and a 12-point swing in Crist’s favor.
