The message of President Abraham Lincoln’s November 19, 1863, Gettysburg Address is still relevant in 2022. The message is to courageously resist the evil forces which threaten America or the government of, by, and for the people will perish from the Earth.

The sentences of the convicted three murderers of Ahmaud Arbery is not justice, because justice would be having him alive today. But it is accountability. It shows us that even in the deep south, with 11 white jurors and only 1 Black juror, that white men can now be sentenced to life in prison for killing a Black man, something unimaginable not long ago. Last February, when the parents of Ahmaud Arbery notified National Action Network about the case, we immediately went to work supporting the family and lawyers in the fight for accountability. Many never thought that in rural Georgia, with this jury, that we would be saying today that these men will spend the rest of their lives in prison, two of them without the possibility of parole.

Georgia Judge Timothy Walmsley sentenced three White killers of 25-year-old Black Ahmaud Abery to life in prison, two without possibility of parole. One, William “Roddy” Bryan, now 52 will have to serve a mandatory 30 years, before being eligible for parole. The defendants appealed their conviction and sentencing. The three are likely to die in Georgia prisons as Ahmaud Arbery’s family requested at the sentencing hearing.
