       Every September, people around the world come together to celebrate African Diaspora Heritage Month. This month-long celebration honors the rich cultural heritage, history, and contributions of people of African descent worldwide. From the Americas to Europe and beyond, African diasporic communities are recognized for their resilience, achievements, and experiences.

Island SPACE Caribbean Museum and Caribbean Professionals Network are excited to announce the third annual Rum Cake and Caribbean Black Cake Fest, set to take place on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024, from 2 to 6 p.m. This event, presented in collaboration with various South Florida bakers from throughout the Caribbean, promises to be a celebration of Caribbean culture and culinary diversity. Attendees will have the opportunity to sample a variety of traditional Spanish, French and Dutch Caribbean rum cakes and the beloved black cake — dark fruit or plum pudding cakes popular across the English-speaking Caribbean.

       “The Reject” showcases the life of McGhee, who rose from obscurity to prominence against the odds. The film highlights McGhee’s journey from being overlooked by society to becoming a powerful and influential figure, driven by his mother’s unyielding faith, his own hard work, and relentless determination. The film stars Kamal Ani-Bello and Romeo Miller, with Miller also contributing to the production of the film under the Romeoland Studios banner alongside Marco Moline, Florida Film House.

       In August the US economy added 142,000 jobs, and unemployment rate fell to 4.2% from 4.3%.  For 44 months, the job growth rate has continued to improve, and when President Biden took over the economy it was going in the wrong direction. There were millions who had lost their jobs because of Covid, and the world economy had crashed.

       Levon Sevunts is a former journalist who works for the UN refugee agency, UNHCR. He had recently returned from Chad, a country hosting 633,867 people who have fled Sudan. Sevunts spoke to me, about his trip:

       The other Bible on which Harris was sworn in was the family Bible of Regina Shelton. Shelton was a neighbor, trusted caretaker, and mentor to Vice President Harris and her little sister Maya as children after school when her mom was working. Harris refers to Shelton as her “second mother.” It was Harris’s actual mother Shyamala Gopalan who guided and encouraged that relationship.
