I recall watching The Color Purple on TV, over and over as youngster. Regardless of the movie’s unforgettable lines that we still recite today, and nostalgic patty-cake scenes that we still emulate to this day, it was fairly depressing.

It broke the record for the largest opening for an African American director, Ryan Coogler; it is also the second biggest opening for a Marvel Studios film behind The Avengers. It also opened more than other Marvel Studios hits such as Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, and Iron Man 3. This is the 18th straight number one opening for Marvel Studios.
