Two seniors from Hampton University’s Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications are heading to Washington after earning one of journalism’s most competitive honors. Christin Fluellen (left) and Jade Abu Bakr (right) have been named recipients of White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) scholarships.

In addition to beach, warm days and cucumber cool evenings, spring brings my favorite time of the year – Jazz in the Gardens! With the success of their 14th annual concert this past weekend, I must salute the organizers for a job well done.

I recall watching The Color Purple on TV, over and over as youngster. Regardless of the movie’s unforgettable lines that we still recite today, and nostalgic patty-cake scenes that we still emulate to this day, it was fairly depressing.
