As Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) begins, the government shutdown casts a dark and threatening cloud over survivors of domestic violence. DVAM is meant to raise awareness about domestic violence, honor survivors, and educate the community about domestic violence. This year, because of the government shutdown, it begins under the threat of funding delays, program closures, and devastating consequences for survivors and their children.

     TLC (The Learning Channel) has produced hit shows such as “1,000 lbs. Sisters”, “My strange addiction”, “Here comes Honey Boo Boo” and plenty of others. While most of the shows differ in content, the exploitation, abuse and humiliation remain consistent throughout. TLC broadcasts people’s issues for ratings while making millions of dollars in profit.

     Join us at Old Town Untapped, our monthly street festival, this month featuring The Shane Duncan Band, a high-energy variety group that plays everything from country-rock to disco. On the first Friday of every month, “Old Town” becomes the epicenter for art, food, and music!
