It means supporting Black-owned businesses, celebrating each other’s success, encouraging friends to chase their dreams, and protecting one another from negativity. Too often, young people are made to feel like they have to struggle alone. The truth is no one makes it alone. Strong communities are built when people help each other rise. It truly takes a village.

In a classroom where students of all ages are singing instead of memorizing, math is starting to make sense. Niah Spriggs, an African American educator in Oklahoma City, is using music to transform how her students learn math with the release of a new album, “Multiply the Beats: Math That Moves,” on all platforms, including YouTube, Apple, and Amazon Music, to name a few. Mufasa (Braelyn Rankins), a small lion cub, is separated from his parents during a natural disaster. He washes up on a riverbank and is saved by another cub, Taka (Theo Somolu). His rescuer, a prince, brings him back to his pride. Esche (Thandie Newton), Taka’s mom, wants to nurture the orphan. Obasi (Lennie James), his dad the king, thinks the interloper should be eaten or banished. Of course, mom wins out.

I am truly a gluten for punishment when I decided to watch Wicked after reading multiple Black Women Social Workers and Therapists’ rave reviews on LinkedIn and Facebook feeds.
She speaks her mind. Unfortunately for family, friends and strangers, most of her rants are aggressive, accusatory, abusive and petty. Hard to believe anyone could be so irascible. Hard to believe she can change. Can she?
